Basically, I need to know what is normal and what is out of bounds for 4 year old behavior.
Right now my husband and I are a little frustrated because while we love our little one and his enormous personality he is pretty much "not listening;" we have to ask him to do something upwards of 5 times before he begins to do it.
Likewise, when we ask him to stop something it can take a crazy amount of talking and other punishments to get him to stop.
We have a current system where he earns privileges like playing with the tablet, playing with the gaming system and watching cartoons when he does proper things--putting dishes in the sink etc.
Our punishments are pretty much the opposite--when he doesn't listen he loses his cartoons in the evening, games on the weekend. Time outs are only for huge tantrums or dangerous activities.
The biggest issue is the repetition of the behavior. An example: He can ride his scooter in the house. He cannot ride it without shoes and pads on. When we ask him to put shoes and pads on, he flips out or will ignore us.
My husband is super frustrated, I am too but part of it I think is being 4--I just need to know how much of it is acceptable (in your eyes!) and how much of it we are contributing to etc.

Put the internet to work for you.
