Am I being unreasonable about cycling?

  • Thread Starter

I am 15, a boy, and currently I make a ~3 mile cycle (I know, ridiculously short) weekly to a sports club in the evening.
I started doing this in the summer and I want to do it in the winter, when it's dark earlier, but my parents refuse to let me cycle in the dark (well lit by street lamps may I add) unless I fit lights to my bike and wear a yellow cycling jacket.

I am fine with having bicycle lights - everybody else does this and it's a sensible way for people to see you. I also wear sports clothing, helmet and shoes, all which have various reflective strips on them.

However, I do not want to wear a bright yellow cycling jacket - it looks disgusting and I don't want to turn up wearing it - every time I mention this to my parents I'm simply told that I am acting "vain" and that I won't be allowed to cycle (at 15) in the dark for a few miles without wearing it for "safety" and that it's not my choice to make.

I don't even mind wearing a top with reflective bits (many black reflective tops available) - I object to wearing something bright yellow that's quite frankly embarrassing, especially considering there are girls of my age making the same route there without any of this and I'll be turning up in some obnoxious yellow.

What can I do?
