Can you have a relationship without sex?

Having a debate with a friend on fb and he says it's wrong to have anal sex and etc and that a relationship doesn't have to have sex?! He said there is no sex through anal sex whether straight or gay sex. I'm sorry but I completely disagree with this. I believe that in a relationship, in order for you to be IN love with someone, that relationship must involve having a physical attraction to someone, as in to express one's love through sexual intercourse. He says that 'we are not animals' and there 'is no love in anal sex'. Completely contradictory since animals only mate to create life, basically. Anyway, what is your thoughts on this? Is anal sex deemed inappropriate and not an act of love? And can you be in a loving romantic relationship without having sex, or anal sex?
