My ex broke up with me after a long time relationship and we're unfortunately still living together, and we have for 2 months after being broken up. He's moving into a 4-bed place with his friends in 3 weeks time though and because he's basically forcing me to move out of my house, I'm staying with him for 6 weeks. Then I'll go home to my parents for the summer before I get my own houseshare in September.
We were together for 3.5 years and he still says he cares about me and I'm his best friend. We're ok when living together now, basically acting as friends. Still spend most evenings together cooking or watching films. I've gone home for the holidays and he still texts me/rings me (I'm making sure not to do either first) every day. He seems happy being close friends still.
What is your opinion on asking him not to start dating other people while we're still living together? Obviously he broke up with me, and that is for another 2 months, but we are literally going to be sleeping in the same room (but separate beds/mattresses) for the next 2 months. I can't afford to move out anywhere else by myself right now and this is the only option and we've both agreed on the living arrangement.
I think if he did start dating anyone it would be cruel to me. Yes we are acting well as friends, but I'm still heartbroken about it. If he started seeing someone when I'm living with him, I wouldn't be able to deal with it and I think I would pack my stuff up and leave and just couch surf somewhere, but considering I'm finishing my degree and have exams and my thesis, that would ruin my last year. I also don't think I could talk to him again after that. Obviously he'll move on someday, but at least when I'm out of the house.
But I do understand that we are broken up and he has no obligation to me anymore.
So I'd like to ask... do you think I can ask him not to date anyone while we're living together?
And if you are a guy and your ex of 3.5 years who you are still close to asked you to do this, would you?
