Is it weird to still talk a lot after you break up with someone?

My bf broke up with me a few weeks ago. The main reason was because I'm going to university, and he doesn't want an LDR, as his last girlfriend that went to uni ended up cheating on him which hurt him a lot. He also said that their relationship just deteriorated because of it, they were too busy for each other, etc and he didn't want to go through that again with me. He keeps talking to me, though, sending me long messages updating me on what he's been up to and asking about me and how I am. I usually leave it a few days to reply cos I'm trying to get on with my life without him... he's even been on holiday for a while now but keeps messaging me and speaking to me still! I just find it a bit weird? My friend thinks he's just finding it hard to stick by his decision not to be with me because he tried to do it for the 'greater good'. I have no idea though. I don't think he does want to still be with me, or surely he'd just come out and say it. I can't think of why else he'd still be bothering to talk to me.
