I've been looking at all kinds - this will be the first car I have purchased on my own. My first car my Dad helped arrange things and steered me toward an economical coupe. The car I have now the ex picked out and I've hung onto it for kiddo. Next spring it will be hers.
I've looked at new, used, sports cars, etc. If money were no object I like the BMW Z4 but 2 seats is impractical even with just one kid since often there are other kids/people in two. I like the Grand Turismo - looks like a sports car but really a station wagon but people who have had BMWs complain about the cost of simple maintenance and I'd have to buy used.
I like the idea of a hybrid but I don't want a Ford, Kia or VW and I've narrowed them down to the 2 models I like the best. So now I'm down to:
Toyota Camry Hybrid
Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
I've done lots of research including asking a Camry owner here what he thinks (braking is often mentioned as a problem) and he loves his and has no problem with it and he's an engineer so I tend to believe that! I'm listing the pros and cons that matter to me, not all of them. Toyota and Hyundai tie on price. Anyone have a Sonata Hybrid?
Camry Pros:
- Price
- Highest ranked Hybrid
- Quieter with best powertrain (which tells me reliable)
Camry Cons:
- Least favorite body style
- Ranked lowest in performance of the 2
- Everything else in the middle ranking-wise
Sonata Pros:
- Body style I like the best
- Best warranty including lifetime on the battery
- More room/wider/longer so probably corners better
Sonata Cons:
- Lowest ranking of the 2 but not by much - including safety
- Lowest ranking in reliability of the 2 (with best warranty oddly)
- Worst fuel economy (but most transmission options so don't know if that's an average - automatic, auto w/ manual mode and 6-speeds are all options)
Anyone know anything about the variable transmission? The good, bad and ugly - particularly reliability-wise? The Sonata is the only one with a standard transmission which probably explains the fuel efficiency being lower. I know the CVT is supposed to be more fuel efficient and smooth/seamless shifting as it operates more on a continuum vs. stepped gears. And that it's generally noisier.
