Should you date your best friend ??

I've been best friends with this guy for a year now and we've helped each other through a lot of situations and get on really well - we never even disagree or argue - he's basically the guy version of me but a year older - he had a girlfriend but recently dumped her and told me that he loved me instead - I've always had a bit of a thing for him but kept it quiet - as a result - he wants to take me out - but it scares me because of the fact that if he could easily do that to his ex girl - is he the type to do it again to me in the future - also hes at our local uni and I'm starting uni in September on the same course - but it was my intention to go a couple of hours away to a university that I've really fallen in love with - because I never thought it would work out anyway because he had a girl - and made myself content - but now he wants to go out with me and for me to go to uni with him.. And I'm very confused now - should I follow my heart and g o out with him - or follow my head and go to the uni that's best for me, travel and then worry about settling which was always my original plan..
