Equality in Marriage

I always thought marriage was about being partners. However, I have been married seven years and rather than being partners in our marriage my husband is the leader and I am the follower. I am wondering if there are relationships that exist where both husband and wife are equal partners? If these relationships exist how does one become an equal partner?

I have discussed this with my husband and he tells me I must earn this right.
