In order for a relationship to work, it requires both of you to communicate with each other and learn to live with each others habits (even if they may be annoying!)..
I think it's all about making sure you're there and that you care - some occasions buying flowers/ chocolates is a nice idea :)
But, what do you do for your other half as a nice gesture?
