How to ask a girl out?

  • Thread Starter

Recently I've become attracted to a girl I know in the year below me at uni. I don't see her that much as we have different timetables but whenever I do, I love talking to her as she's so funny, intelligent and witty. She also asks me for advice on various work-related issues and what she can expect from the studying as I'm in the year above.

This may sound really stupid but how exactly can I ask her out? I'm expecting to see her at a couple of society events in the next few weeks (if I don't see her in uni before that). My plan was to just straight up ask her for coffee/dinner/night out/cinema trip but my friend (another guy) has advised me against that and says that I need to work at gaining her interest a lot more before I ask her. He says I need to get in with her social group, maintain their interest and win over her friends before I ask her out. The problem is that I only know a handful of her friends but I don't know the people she lives with. It could be a lot of effort to get to know her friends, by which time she might be taken anyway. Plus I think my time is running out (just turned 23) and I'm really not that confident with asking girls out, especially as it's been ages since my last relationship and I've forgotten a lot of the tricks. Is this the best way to go about doing it or can I just go straight to asking her?

The reason I ask is that I think I might have some competition from other guys in her year (she is stunning, so obviously other guys will want her too) and I want to get in before they do (if they haven't already)! They are going to see her a lot more often than I do so they'll have more opportunity to win her over. I'm quite stuck as I've been out of the dating game for a VERY long time (close to giving up) but I want to give it a go again. I like her a hell of a lot, and I think she might be interested in me too.

What to do and how to do it? Any help would be much appreciated :)
