Do Men/Women really want to be equals?

As I read through threads on TAM and continually see the problems with the "Nice Guy" issues some marriages are facing, and see testimonials from guys who say their marriages have improved after addressing their own "nice guy" issues, along with my personal observations in that most of the happy marriages I have observed, the man is the clear alpha, it makes me wonder....

Do either men or women want their marriage to be an equal partnership or do both really want the man to be the clear leader? I don't men the man rules with an iron fist, but the leader with a distinct advantage in the balance of power.

I know traditional views of marriage held that the man was the head of the household, but clearly over the last couple of decades, there has been changes in that perception, or at least attempts to alter that perception such that equality is more the norm now days. Is that a faulty recipe for success?

I'd be interested in hearing from folks with views on both sides of the discussion, and how it works for them in their marriage.
