I need a (love) doctor!

So I've known this girl for a while. She has a boyfriend of sorts, and they've been going out for months. Now, I'm approaching this as a friend (I'm not attracted to her). She is completely besotted with him. He has a health problem which has led to him breaking up the relationship, for 'her own good'. Yet they still exchange love letters and Facetime etc. She's an emotional wreck because she's receiving mixed signals, and she's desperate to be with him. He's somewhat manipulative - imagine a girl furtively checking her phone on the dancefloor, only to see a message saying "stop dancing, you're too drunk" from her absent boyfriend.

How do I help? Do I tell them to stop talking to each other (tiny chance of happening) or tell them to face the health problem together (when the boyfriend is a massive stoic)? Basically, how do I stop my friend falling into a self-perpetuating vicious cycle of broken hope and depression?

Cheers!
