Yesterday I was talking with a buddy in one of my classes and he confided in me that he is going to propose to his girlfriend.
Now, after seeing what marriage does, and having to go through all that, I cautioned putting on the brakes on this idea. He is planning on spending over $7000 on a ring. And as a part-time college student, that is A LOT of money! I think that is almost half of what I earned last year. But I could be biased after my experiences.
But my buddy is 20, so he can't even drink yet. He has known his girlfriend for 6 years, but I haven't met her. And she is around the same age. Beyond that, I know nothing about her. My buddy is smart and motivated, but I think this is a foolish decision.
I advised that he at least wait till he finishes school and gets his degree. He said he plans on making it a long-term engagement. And he has another 2 years of school left until he graduates, assuming he doesn't go to grad school.
Personally, I think this is a mistake. I think he is too young, people change from 20 to 25, he doesn't have his degree, can't even drink yet, and I would tell him to avoid marriage. But I didn't tell him that, I just said I'd advise caution and wait till after college to propose, but I know he isn't going to listen to me.
What do you guys think? Too young? Or is there some romance in it that I am missing?
