Girls just be honest, how important is a man's social status and wallet?

Situation: reasonably good-looking to average, hard-working man with some ambition in life and a generally positive outlook but for various factors is not 'high social status'. Earns enough to get by but isn't rolling in it, a modest income, but enjoys what he does and makes an effort. In every other way you're a perfect match.

How much would the fact he's not top dog actually matter? I would hope not too much, I suspect many embittered men have started to see these as deal-breakers and women as essentially gold-diggers.
