Narcissist

I've been wondering about this for a while; How does one live with a narcissist?

5 years ago, we hired a developer for our team, TE (for short). I had a chance to interview him as well and in 10 mins of talking with him, I realized he has a temper, was arrogant and something was "off". He was wearing jeans to the interview which I thought shows arrogance.

I made it clear to my manager and another manager that TE shouldn't be hired and I noted his temper and lack of professionalism. He was hired against my objections.

TE quickly proved to me that I was right. His bad temper but also his charm..if that's the right word. By "charm" I mean, he was nice one hour, he would turn into a nasty guy another hour. I could never tell when he would lose his temper. As months went by, we hired more developers and TE's behavior got worse. Ups and downs.

I was, at times, consumed by his behavior towards me. He was like that with others too, I'm sure, but I was the closest person working with him. Sometimes the things he would say to me was like stabbing me in the heart!

I reached out to my manager and HR but I was told I'm the one who's misunderstanding things. I didn't want to leave my job, so....

I bought a book, "Toxic Coworkers", researched, educated myself and worked with my therapist to understand his behavior. When she first said "TE is a narcissist", I truly didn't know what it meant. This was my first experience with a coworker from hell.

I can go on and on about this person. I can write a book about it!

He left the company last year, but wanted to come back and the company was close to re-hiring him, I'm serious, and that's when I had to unleash my thoughts on the new manager about TE. I'm glad he listened and didn't hire him back.

TE is married with 3 kids. I met his wife once when she came to work for a visit. This was 2 yrs ago or so and since then...I've been wondering how she could live with him?? doesn't she notice his personality? is he the same with his wife and kids? he did say once that his daughter is a narcissist. Also, we were watching TV in the break room once and he said this guy on TV is a narcissist. I thought " YOU are a narcissist"

Looking back, I learned a lot about dealing with difficult coworkers but TE is the worst coworker I've ever had.
