What Is He Doing?

Maybe 2 years ago, I hooked up with someone for a bit (maybe a month...and nothing serious). We can't help but keep in touch, we have several mutual friends, and there was nothing lost at the end of things.

Yet, every time we now *casually* hang out, he checks up on me. A few months ago, a casual "how was the rest of your night?" (after he checked out). Every year, a "happy birthday." Tonight, "hey, did you get home okay? Coming out to {event} this week?"

Yes, he's a nice guy in general, and I'd be perfectly happy to call him a friend, but, really? Outside of my very best and longest-term friends, the only reason people I call friends know it's my birthday is because (a) Facebook told them or (b) they're coming to whatever I'm doing to celebrate. Dude in question is neither on FB nor specifically invited to birthday stuff (though may get a second-hand invite through mutual friends), yet, there's the text. Nor do my friends text me to ask if I got home okay unless I am {ahem}-faced (was not today), nor to just see how my night was after they bugged unless there's dirt they want to know.

Yet...it seems to stop at these more-than-casual contacts. Maybe he thinks I'm not interested in continuing things (totally would be in any capacity...best sex of my life and nice guy)? Or, just the female version of friend-zoned?
