House Decorating - Looking for suggestions

Hello everyone,

We will have been in our first home for a year now in the fall. Since then I've lost a job and then found a much better paying one and as we are stabilizing financially I'm thinking its about time to start replacing our apartment furniture and decorations (think milk crates we got for free from grocery stores, over the door hangers for closet organization, ikea furnishings, or just cardboard boxes because we were too broke to afford drawers).

Plus I've been somewhat embarrassed to invite people over as we have very sparse furnishings and decorations - in some rooms even boxes still from the move just because we have no where to put it!

Anyways, I'm looking for affordable ways to decorate and 'fill in' the house. Any particular brands that you would suggest? Anything that looks more expensive than it actually is?

Most of our friends are still living in apartments so they haven't been much help!

Unfortunately I work a 8 to 6 pm job, so most garage sales are out of my reach until the weekend - and by then they're pretty picked over.

Also a disclaimer: I have nothing against Ikea, but they are pretty far away from where we live so we maybe visit it once a year. Hoping more accessible stores or online stores may be a little more convenient for us - but I could be wrong. Let me know!
