Wife has episodes of emotional and physical abuse

The title says it all. This is my first legal marriage - I was in a long term relationship (10 years) which fell apart after my ex had a mid life crisis and left me. I met my current wife shortly thereafter and we married about a year later.

I knew that my wife had episodes of being emotionally and physically abuse before we got married. They are not frequent but they are very damaging when they occur.

She verbally attacks me, and she verbally and physically attacks her eldest child from a previous marriage. I admit that I have been in denial about how destructive this is and I am now coming out of my denial.

My wife thinks this is no big deal, that I am overreacting. I have told her that I want us to go to couples counseling. She has refused in the past but this morning she agreed and said that we would go. It is beginning to dawn on her that I am growing more and more unhappy with the pattern of behavior she is displaying.

I am moving from a place where I was willing to tolerate the occasional outburst from her, to where I now believe that any abuse is not acceptable and not a normal part of a healthy, loving relationship. I suspect my wife might have a serious mental health condition such as borderline personality disorder.

We have been married for three months and together for about 1.5 years.

Has anyone successfully solved this problem in their marriage?
