Do you make sure your partners get tested before having sex?

When people enter a new relationship how common is it for them to ask their partner to get tested? Im an old virgin and don't want to catch anything but Id be willing to get tested too so that they can be ressured as well. The thing is where I live people don't tend to bother they would probably see it as being obsessive/a bit over the top. I wouldnt know how to bring the topic up with a partner without offending them.

Is it really that common though to get tested to be reassured that someone is disease free or do most people tend not to bother and just rely on protection?
