Would you get back with an ex?

My friend is contemplating getting back together with his ex. They split up 8 months ago, and in that time he's 'seen' a couple of girls, whereas she's seen a fair few guys, and has had a 3 month relationship - she seemed to move on a lot quicker than him. Their breakup was horrible, they pretty much hated each other, and it got worse when she started the new relationship as she didn't feel like she could talk to him anymore. Now he's telling me since they haven't spoken for two months, he's contemplating making contact to see if he can start something again - I don't think it'll work, but whatever. So, my question(s). Will his plan work or go terribly wrong? I.e. she won't feel anything for him anymore - I should persuade him not to do this... ... and would you ever get back with an ex after a bad breakup and knowing she's been with other guys?
