does he still have feelings?

I would like to know from a guys point of view, when you have liked a girl or even loved her but never got together, is it possible for you to put her into the friend zone in your mind? A guy I was friends with years ago said he had strong feelings for me and we stopped talking because of it, he said he couldn't be friends and wanted to move on. Now he's just back in touch saying he wants to be friends again, do you think he still has those feelings or realized that being friends is what he really wants.
