Does the 180 actually work?

I've heard many people on this site suggest to a fellow posted to do the "180." If you don't know what that is, the short is to stop contacting the other person in any way and take care of yourself. Act as if the other person no longer affects you. There are some other things, not going to list them all here.

Anyway, it seems to me that the 180 is too driven by a motivation that isn't healthy. You do the 180 and turn off all need for the other person, let them see you doing well and looking great, and they will come back.

Does that actually work? Has anyone actually saved a long term relationship after doing a 180 or is it really only good for the short term to help you get over someone?
