Telling him I like him

I'm friends with a guy I like, and he's given indications in the past that he likes me as well. He's been going on dates with girls recently and while he tells our other friends about it, he hasn't been telling me. One of our friends told me a while ago that he'd got a girlfriend, but the circumstances don't really add up and I've seen no evidence of it so I think it might just have been one of his dates and that my friend misunderstood (I don't think she'd lie to me). I think about him a lot, and I was thinking about writing him a letter (not good at talking :D) to let him know I like him. Is this a good plan?
